As a foreigner or American Citizen you might have questions about how long you can stay in Spain as a property owner:  

Can foreigners buy property in Mallorca?

Yes, the Spanish government welcomes and even encourages foreign buyers to purchase real estate and the buying process for property in Spain for foreigners is relatively simple.

Can US citizens own property in Spain?

Yes, all US citizens are able to purchase property in Spain. If you make a substantial real estate purchase that meets the qualifying criteria US citizens may even qualify for the Spanish Golden Visa / Spain Investor Visa.

What is a Golden Visa?

A Golden Visa, officially known as the Spain Investor visa, is a residence permit issued to non-EU citizens who make a significant investment in Spain, such as buy real estate, invest in a company, or create employment opportunities. Similar to US investor Visa for Europeans and other foreigners, who want to live and work in the US.

   

As a European can I just move to Spain and live there?

Depending on why you wish to move to Spain, you must select the type of long-stay visa and residence permit corresponding to your travel purpose. You need a long-stay visa to apply for a residence permit. A long-stay (D visa) visa will allow you to stay in the Spanish territory for long-term residency.

How long can I live in Spain if I own a property?

Now, as with any other country in the European Shengen area, you are allowed to stay in Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period visa-free. For most people buying a property in Spain as a vacation home this is ample.

Cost of living in Spain vs the USA

This's especially important if you're planning to work remotely and earn in USD. On average, the cost of living in Spain is 125% cheaper than in the USA. The biggest differences in cost are in rent, utilities, groceries, daycare, and health insurance.

Is healthcare free in Spain?

Aside from some small costs, like a deductible on prescriptions, the public healthcare system in Spain is free for every citizen. This is made possible because it is funded by social security payments from employed and self-employed workers.

Is US Social Security taxed in Spain?

Spain taxes its tax residents on their pension, retirement, and foreign social security earnings at a rate from 19% to 47%, depending on overall income. Non-tax residents, however, face tax rates of 8% to 40% depending on overall income. Please consult with an International Tax Accountant.
